Electrical work in Totton

The everyday electrical work in Totton

Most of what I am called out for here is straightforward. A breaker that keeps tripping. Sockets or a lighting circuit that have gone dead. A fuse board old enough that nobody wants to touch it. An inspection and test before a house is sold, bought or let, and the landlord certificates that go with a rented property. Adding to a house is the other half of the work: extra sockets, outside lights, a cooker or shower circuit, a charge point on the drive, and rewiring where the cabling has genuinely come to the end of its life.

You get me from the first look to the certificate at the end — no subcontractors and no call centre. I see what is actually there, give you a price before anything starts, and leave the paperwork that shows the work was tested. Quotes cost nothing and commit you to nothing.

Across the river from Southampton

Totton sits on the far side of the River Test from Southampton, and it is a town of its own with its own postcode, SO40. People sometimes assume an electrician coming from the Southampton side will not want to cross over. It is part of my normal patch, and so are Eling and Calmore. The one practical point is the approach over Redbridge, which is slow at the busy times of day, so I book Totton work around it rather than promise an arrival time that depends on the traffic.

One job that comes up here: garages becoming rooms

A lot of Totton houses were built with a garage attached, and a good number of those are now a study, a playroom or another bedroom. A garage usually has one modest circuit — a light, a socket, perhaps a door motor — and none of it suits a room somebody is going to live in. Sockets where the furniture will actually go, lighting that suits a room rather than a workbench, and protection to match are all far easier to sort before the plasterboard goes up.

Extensions, conversions and the board behind them

Plenty of work here starts with building rather than a fault. An extension, a loft conversion or a knocked-through kitchen is far easier to wire while the walls are still open. Agree early where the sockets, lights and switches go, around where the furniture will actually end up, and you avoid paying to put it right afterwards. It’s also the moment to look at the consumer unit, since a board that suited the original house may not have the room or the protection the new circuits need.

The same question comes up with an EV charge point. A charger needs a circuit of its own, so it comes down to whether the board has room and whether the supply can take a car charging alongside everything else. If you’ve a few jobs in mind over the next year or two, it’s worth me looking at them together.

Not sure where to start?

That’s a normal place to begin. Tell me what’s happening and I’ll explain what it means for the house. After more than 15 years I’d rather look at the whole job than jump at the first thing mentioned, so you know what needs doing now and what each part costs. Straight answer, free quote, and the decision stays yours. Let’s have a chat.

Questions

Totton questions

Do you come over the river to Totton?

Yes. Totton, Eling and Calmore are all part of my normal patch. I just plan around the busy times on the Redbridge approach rather than sit in them.

We are converting the garage. When do you need to be involved?

Before the walls and ceiling are finished. The old garage circuit usually needs replacing or re-routing, and the new room needs proper sockets and lighting rather than whatever fed the garage door.
