What I need to know before quoting

A home charge point is a simple job at some properties and an involved one at others, and the difference is rarely the charger. It is where the car is parked, where the consumer unit is, and what the incoming supply can carry.

  • Whether you park on your own drive or in a garage
  • Where the consumer unit and the meter are
  • Photos of the board and of the meter position
  • The charger you have in mind, or that you have not chosen one yet

What the installation involves

The charge point gets a dedicated circuit with its own protection at the board, and the supply is checked to confirm it can take the extra load alongside everything else in the house.

The earthing needs checking too. On many supplies the earth arrives combined with the neutral, and a charger used outdoors needs protection in case that combined conductor is ever lost. Depending on the charger, that protection is either built in or added separately.

Once it is installed, the charge point is tested and certificated like any other new circuit, and the network operator is notified.

Choosing a charger

Home chargers sold in Great Britain have to include smart charging features, so most can be set to charge at cheaper times. Beyond that, the choices that matter day to day are whether the cable is attached or separate, the charging rate your car can actually use, and where the unit is mounted. If you have not picked one yet, I can talk through what suits the installation.

How it works

How a charge point installation goes

  1. Tell me about the property

Where you park and where the board is. Photos help a lot.

  2. Supply and board checked

Capacity, earthing arrangement and the cable route.

  3. You get a price

In writing, before anything is fitted.

  4. Installed, tested and notified

Certificated, with the network operator told about it.

Questions

Charge point questions

Do I have to buy the charger through you?

No. If you have already bought one, tell me the make and model so I can check what it needs before I quote.

Is there a grant for a home charger?

Grant schemes change, and each has its own rules on eligibility and on who can install. Check the current scheme’s requirements before you book any installer.

Thinking about a home charger?

Send me photos of the board and where you park, and I will come back to you.
