The jobs that do not have their own page

Most of what an electrician actually does is not dramatic. A socket where there has never been one. An outside light. A shed that needs a proper supply instead of an extension lead through a window. A light switch in the wrong place since the day the house was built.

None of that needs a category. If it is electrical and it needs doing, ask.

Things people ask for most

Extra sockets, usually in kitchens and bedrooms where one double has been doing the work of four. Replacing light fittings, including downlights that have started flickering. Outside lights and power to a garage, shed or garden office. Extractor fans. Cooker and oven connections. Smoke and heat alarms. Bathroom lighting and shaver points, where the rules about what can go where are a little stricter. Taking out the odd bit of DIY wiring that was never quite right.

Small jobs are still worth doing properly

A job being small does not mean it is not notifiable, or that it does not want testing afterwards. Some of it — anything in a bathroom, a new circuit, work involving the consumer unit — carries requirements whether it takes an hour or a day. You get the same certification for a small job as a big one, because it is the same standard.

If you are not sure who to ask

Describe it in whatever words make sense. If it turns out to be a job for a plumber or an aerial fitter I will say so, and if I know someone good I will tell you who.

How it works

How small jobs work

  1. Describe the job

In your own words. Photos are not needed and neither is the right terminology.

  2. I tell you if it is straightforward

Some small jobs are; some quietly are not, and I will say which.

  3. You get a price

Before I start, as with anything else.

  4. Done and tested

With certification where the work calls for it.

Questions

Questions about smaller jobs

My job is not listed anywhere on your site. Can you still do it?

Almost certainly. The pages cover the things people search for, not the limit of what I do. Describe it and I will tell you straight away whether it is something I can help with.

Is it worth calling someone out for one socket?

Yes, and it is more common than you would think. It is worth mentioning anything else you have been putting off at the same time, because the travel is already covered.

Do small jobs still need certificates?

Some do. Anything in a bathroom, any new circuit, and anything involving the consumer unit carries requirements regardless of how long it takes. I will tell you which applies before starting.

Can you undo someone else’s DIY wiring?

Regularly. There is no lecture attached — I would rather sort it out than talk about how it got there.

Got a job in mind?

Describe it however you like and I will tell you what is involved.
