Rewiring older housesSarisbury and Sarisbury Green are the same place as far as this page is concerned, and both are covered. Most jobs are everyday ones. Finding out why a circuit trips or a room has lost power. Replacing sockets, switches and light fittings, and fitting fans and outside lights. Adding circuits for a cooker, shower or car charger. And inspection and testing for owners, buyers and landlords. Consumer unit replacement is a regular one here, as is rewiring where a house has never had it done.

Some houses near the green still have their original fuse box. That is not an emergency in itself, but a blown fuse has to be rewired at the right rating for the circuit — never thicker wire or twisted strands. A board of that age has no RCD, which matters most outdoors, so a plug-in RCD adaptor is a sensible stop-gap until it is replaced.
If you’re extending, converting the loft or fitting out a garage, settle the wiring early. The circuits go in before the plasterboard goes on, the sockets and switches go where you actually want them, and I check the board for room and protection. Planning it at that stage is what stops the work being undone later. A workshop or garden office at the end of the garden needs a protected supply of its own, sized for the run.
Where an older house is being worked on anyway, it is often the right moment to ask whether part of it is due for rewiring while access is easy, rather than lifting the same floors twice.

Questions
Current wiring regulations call for surge protection on most new installations, so it is normally part of a replacement rather than an optional extra. It helps protect the installation and what is plugged into it from voltage spikes.
No. The fuse wire is the safety device; thicker wire lets a fault overheat the cable instead. A fuse that keeps going is telling you something is wrong on that circuit, and it needs tracing.
