Electrical work in Botley

The work I do in Botley

Everyday jobs make up most of it. Tracing a fault when a circuit trips or a room loses power. Replacing sockets, switches and light fittings, or fitting an extractor fan. Changing an old fuse box for a consumer unit with RCD protection. And EICRs for owners, buyers and landlords. Additional circuits for kitchens, showers, outside sockets and car chargers come up regularly, and so do partial and full rewires on the older houses.

Botley shares its SO30 postcode with Hedge End, so plenty of forms and maps will call your address Hedge End. That changes nothing about whether I come: Botley is covered, and so is the stretch out towards Curdridge. Naming Botley in your message is all it takes. Quotes are free and the price is agreed before work begins.

Light fittings in older houses

One question comes up here before a light is changed: is there an earth on the lighting circuit? In houses wired before the mid-1960s there often is not. That mattered little with plastic ceiling roses, but a metal pendant, switch plate or set of downlights needs an earth to be safe — so the circuit is worth checking before the fittings are bought.

Extensions, outbuildings and new circuits

Building work is the other regular reason people ring. An extension, a loft conversion or a garage being made into a room is best wired before the walls go back, with the positions agreed before the rest of the job moves on. Sorting it early avoids work being undone. I check the board for capacity and protection at the same time. A workshop or garden office at the end of the garden wants a supply of its own, sized for the distance.

Newer loads are part of the same question. A charge point, an electric shower or a bigger kitchen all draw on the same board, so it is worth looking at them together rather than one at a time.

Not sure where to start?

Ring and describe what’s going on. After 15 years it’s usually clear quite quickly what needs attention, what would just be nice to have, and what’s fine as it is. I’ll tell you which is which before I quote, and there’s no obligation. Let’s have a chat.

Questions

Botley questions

How can I tell whether my lighting circuit has an earth?

Not reliably from the switches alone, and it is not something to find out by unscrewing a ceiling rose. I can check the circuit before you buy the fittings and tell you whether metal ones are an option.

My postcode comes up as Hedge End. Does that matter?

Not at all. The two places share SO30, which is why forms often show Hedge End. Both are within where I work.

Something electrical to sort in Botley?

Say what you have in mind and roughly how old the house is, and I will come back to you.
