Everyday electrical workWest Wellow sits on the A36 west of Romsey, close to the Wiltshire border, and I cover the village and the lanes around it. The work is the everyday sort: tracing faults when something trips or stops working, replacing sockets, switches and light fittings, fitting extractor fans and outside lights, changing old fuse boards for consumer units with modern protection, and carrying out EICRs and landlord certificates. Extra circuits, kitchen and shower supplies, and rewiring as well.
Peter comes out, looks at what is there, and quotes before anything starts — NAPIT registered, fully insured, and no charge for the visit to price the job.
One fault worth explaining, because it often lands with the wrong trade first. Plenty of houses still heat water with an immersion in the cylinder. If its switch is on and nothing happens, the fault is in the switch, the circuit, the thermostat or the element — and a switch that feels warm or looks discoloured needs attention in its own right. The thermostat’s safety cut-out trips when water overheats, so it should be checked rather than simply reset. Replacing an element usually means draining part of the cylinder, which may need a plumber too.
Properties out this way often have something beyond the house: a garage, a workshop, a stable block, a garden office. Power out there usually means a protected circuit sized for the distance, and sometimes its own small board rather than a long extension lead. Extensions and loft conversions are best wired while everything is still open, with the positions agreed early and the board checked for capacity first.
An EV charge point is worth thinking about at the same time, since it needs a dedicated circuit and the incoming supply has the final say.

Questions
Check the breaker or fuse for that circuit at the consumer unit and, if there is a timer, that it is set to on. If both are fine, the switch, thermostat or element needs testing. Do not take the cover off the immersion to reset it yourself.
Tell me what has stopped or what needs inspecting, and I will come back to you.
