Electrical work in Lymington

What I am called out for in Lymington

Day to day this is domestic electrical work of every ordinary kind. Tracing a fault when a circuit trips or a room loses power. Replacing worn sockets, switches and light fittings, and fitting extractor fans. Changing an old fuse box for a consumer unit with modern protection. And EICRs for homeowners, buyers and landlords. Additions come up just as often — extra sockets, outside lights, a cooker or shower circuit, mains-linked smoke alarms — along with partial and full rewires in the older houses.

Peter covers Lymington and the places sharing its SO41 postcode: Pennington, Milford on Sea, Everton and Sway among them. If your address says Lymington but you are out in a village, you are covered the same way. Every quote is free, with a clear price agreed before any work starts.

Houses over three floors

A smoke alarm at the bottom of the stairs may not wake anyone at the top of a tall house. In a house on three floors, as a number of the older town houses are, the usual answer is mains-powered alarms linked together so that one sounding sets them all off. Alarms that link by radio mean no cable has to run between floors.

Before fixing anything to an outside wall

The centre of Lymington is a conservation area. Inside the house that rarely changes anything electrical; outside it can. A new light on the front wall, a charge point, a relocated meter box or a cable run across the face of the building may need the council’s agreement first. That is a question for the district council’s planning department rather than for me, and far better asked before anything is fixed to the wall. Where there is a choice, a fitting on a side or rear wall often makes the answer simpler.

Extensions, garden rooms and workshops

Building work is worth a call early. An extension or loft conversion is best wired while the walls are still open, with the sockets, lighting and circuits agreed before the rest of the job moves on. Sorting it then avoids paying to undo it later. I’ll check the board for room and protection at the same time, and occasionally that tips a house into a partial rewire while access is easy. A garden room, summer house or workshop is the same thing further out, on its own protected supply.

If a car charger is on the horizon, mention it then rather than later. It needs a dedicated circuit, and knowing about it early can change what the board needs today.

Not sure where to start?

Ring and describe the problem in your own words. Leave it, repair it or replace it: after 15 years on the tools I can usually tell you which makes sense and what each would cost. I won’t push you towards the biggest one. The quote is free and nothing happens until you say so. Let’s have a chat.

Questions

Lymington questions

Can linked smoke alarms be fitted without lifting floors?

Usually. Each alarm still needs a supply where it is fitted, often from the lighting on that floor, but alarms that link by radio mean nothing has to be run between storeys.
