Consumer unit replacement in Eastleigh

I’m based in Eastleigh, so this is everyday local work for me.

I replace, upgrade, install and repair consumer units and older fuse boards across Eastleigh, Chandlers Ford, Bishopstoke and Fair Oak, and test and certificate the work on completion.

Fuse board or consumer unit — the same job

People in Eastleigh ask for this work under a lot of different names: a new fuse board, a fuse box replacement, a consumer unit upgrade, a board that needs repairing. It is the same piece of equipment and the same conversation.

Whatever you call it, I’ll look at what you have and tell you honestly whether it genuinely needs replacing or whether something smaller will do — then price it before I start.

When an Eastleigh property needs a new board

  • An old rewireable fuse box with fuse wire rather than circuit breakers
  • No RCD protection where there should be
  • A board that trips repeatedly or will not reset
  • Scorching, overheating or visible damage
  • An EICR that recorded a fault code against the board
  • Adding load — a shower, an extension, or an EV charge point

What I tend to find locally

Because I am based in Eastleigh, this is everyday local work rather than a long call-out.

The older terraced housing near the town centre and the railway works is where original fuse boxes and limited RCD protection still turn up most often, and a full replacement is usually the sensible answer. Bishopstoke and Fair Oak have a lot of mid-century and later family housing where the board is simply reaching the end of its service life — a cleaner job, often an upgrade to RCBOs. In Chandlers Ford and Boyatt Wood, where much of the stock is 1960s onwards, it is more often an additional circuit or a supply for a charge point than a complete replacement.

That is a starting point, not a diagnosis — I’ll confirm what your property actually needs when I look at it.

Questions

Common questions in Eastleigh

Do you cover Chandlers Ford and Bishopstoke?

Yes — along with Fair Oak, Horton Heath, Allbrook, Boyatt Wood, West End and Hedge End. I’m based in Eastleigh.

Is a fuse box the same as a consumer unit?

Effectively yes. “Fuse box” usually means an older rewireable board; “consumer unit” is the modern equivalent with circuit breakers and RCD or RCBO protection.

How long will the power be off?

Part of the day, depending on the property and the number of circuits. I’ll give you a realistic idea before you book.

My EICR failed on the consumer unit — can you fix it?

Yes — that is one of the most common reasons a board gets replaced. I can carry out the remedial work and sort the paperwork.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. I test the installation on completion and you get the appropriate certification.

How much does it cost in Eastleigh?

It depends on the board, the number of circuits and the state of the existing installation, so I price each job individually rather than publishing one headline figure. The quote is free and carries no obligation.
