Replacement, upgrade, installation or repair
People in Southampton ask for this under every name going: a new fuse board, a fuse box replacement, a consumer unit upgrade, a board that needs repairing, or a new board fitted for an extension. It is the same piece of equipment and the same conversation, and I do all of it.
If you are not sure which one you need, that is normal. Just tell me what you have and I’ll talk you through it.
What Southampton boards tend to need
In the older terraced housing through Portswood, Shirley and Bitterne, original rewireable boards and split-load units without adequate RCD protection are still common. On that stock a replacement is usually the sensible answer, and the circuits behind it often want testing at the same time.
On the post-war estates — Millbrook, Lordshill, Thornhill — the wiring is generally sound and the board is simply at the end of its life. That is a cleaner job, and often an upgrade to RCBOs rather than anything more involved.
In the newer apartment stock near the waterfront the question is more often about adding capacity: an additional circuit, or a supply for an EV charge point where the parking arrangement allows it.
Why a new board sometimes finds problems
Modern protective devices are more sensitive than the ones they replace. A fault that an old board tolerated for years will show up immediately on a new one — which is exactly what it is there to do. On older Southampton installations that is common enough that I would rather test before committing to a firm price, so you are not surprised halfway through.

Questions
Consumer unit questions in Southampton
Is a fuse box the same as a consumer unit?
Effectively yes. “Fuse box” usually means an older rewireable board; “consumer unit” is the modern equivalent with circuit breakers and RCD or RCBO protection. Ask for either and I know what you mean.
My EICR failed on the consumer unit — can you fix it?
Yes. It is one of the most common reasons a Southampton report comes back unsatisfactory, particularly in the older terraced housing. I can carry out the remedial work and sort the paperwork.
How long will the power be off?
A good part of the day, depending on the property and the number of circuits. I’ll give you a realistic idea before you book.
Can you fit a board ready for an EV charger?
Often yes, but it depends on the existing supply and, in a flat, on the parking and the freeholder. Tell me the situation and I’ll tell you what is actually possible.
What if you find other problems?
I’ll tell you before doing anything about it. A new board is more sensitive than an old one and will expose faults it used to tolerate, which is why I would rather test an older installation before quoting a firm price.
How much does it cost in Southampton?
It depends on the board, the number of circuits and the state of the existing installation, so I price each job individually rather than publishing one headline figure. The quote is free and carries no obligation.
