Smaller electrical jobsAndover is at the northern end of the area I cover, beyond Winchester. The work there is the same as anywhere else. Tracing faults behind a tripping circuit or a dead socket. Replacing sockets, switches and light fittings, and changing consumer units. EICRs for owners, buyers and landlords. Adding circuits for kitchens, showers and car chargers, and rewiring where the installation has reached the end of its life.
A lot of the town’s housing was built during its expansion in the 1960s and 70s, which is exactly the age where testing before pricing pays off. A free quote, an agreed price, and a certificate for the work.
One check worth making in houses of that age. Metal gas and water pipes should be connected to the main earthing point by green-and-yellow cables clamped near the meter and stopcock. Decades of plumbing disturb it: a pipe replaced in plastic leaves a clamp connected to nothing, a boiler move takes the bonding with it. It has to be checked before a consumer unit is replaced, so it is often put right then.
Outside jobs are steady. Weatherproof sockets, garden and driveway lighting, a supply out to a shed, garage or garden office on its own protected circuit. Indoors, extensions and loft conversions are cheapest wired before the walls are closed up, with the sockets and switches agreed first and the board checked for room. Sorting that early avoids paying to put it right afterwards.
A charge point asks the same question of the board and the incoming supply, so it is worth including in the plan rather than treating it as a separate job later.
If you’re not certain what the house needs, that’s a reason to ring rather than a problem. Tell me what you’ve got and I’ll explain the realistic options and what each would cost, so you can decide what’s worth doing now. 15 years in, that’s the part I’m most useful for. Free quote. It is normally recorded as potentially dangerous, which means it should be put right soon rather than left. Where the pipes are accessible near the meter and stopcock, it is usually a short job.
Tell me what you need, and mention any plumbing work since the house was built.
